Smithsonian Castle

The Smithsonian Castle is the symbolic figurehead of the whole smithsonian empire. It was the first building in the now dozens of buildings. It was completed in 1855 and it is located right on the green at the Mall of America in Washington DC.

The Castle itself now operates as a bit of an ambassador to the Smithsonian institutions on the Mall of America. It is the tourist welcome center. You don't have access to all of it, only a part of it. Much of it is now administrative offices. But the first floor is open to the public and there are various information displays and works devoted to the history of the Smithsonian. It even houses the ashes of Smithson himself.

When you arrive at the Mall of America you really should visit the castle before visiting any of the other Smithsonian buildings.
