Duke Chapel

Duke chapel is located on the Duke University Campus in Durham North Carolina. It was built between 1930 and 1935 in English Gothic Style with 77 stained glass windows.

There are a lot of interesting things about this chapel including the unique stone used to build it. It is Duke Bluestone from North Carolina and Indiana Limestone. I have pictures below of this quite unique stonework. The interior is lined with Guastavino tile.

The Bell tower on the outside climbs to a height of 210 feet and the ceiling on the inside is an astonishing 73 feet high .

Many things struck me about this beautiful chapel. First off I can't quite come to terms with calling it a chapel! It is much too large to be a chapel! It is a cathedral in my mind. After that one of the most striking things is the amazing height of the interior ceiling.

Here is a closeup look at some of the stonework.

This is a University Campus so the grounds surrounding the chapel are of course beautiful too.
