Buttress

A Buttress is a gothic architecture element. It is a structure that supports a wall. It holds the outward pressure from the internal parts of the building and the weight of the roof preventing the walls from bowing and collapsing outward.

This illustration shows six buttresses against the wall of a gothic cathedral.
