A castle is a large and beautiful stone structure that housed Kings and protected its people from the sieges and attacks of enemies. They were sometimes lavish and sometimes very plain...
This is a great book if you really want to know about fortresses and how and why they were built. It gets into the meat and potatoes of their form and function. One of my favorite castle books, lots of floorplans, designs and pictures.

A Medieval Castle was a castle, but it was also a place with a history, a place that had secrets and secret passages. It was a place where tremendous battles were fought to the death by knights.
Let's Take a look at a real Medieval Castle! Here is a model of the Meersburg Castle - An old legend and a 1548 document say that the creation of this impressive stronghold dates back to the 7th century which means this castle is possibly well over a thousand years old and still in perfect condition. It is located on Lake Constance in Germany.
Inside the Knights Hall - This is a picture I took inside the Hall of the Knights. Of course the electric light was installed many centuries later. See how the windows are arranged to let a good amount of sunlight into the hall. Imagine the knights sitting at the table and making plans for defending against a sieging enemy.
The tale of the Black Knight - Inside this Medieval Castle there is an armory where they have a variety of weapons and armor on display. One of the things that struck me was the size of the armor. It was quite small- as if the knights stood maybe five foot six at their tallest. Here is a picture of one of the suits of armor. It is black so I call it the Black Knights Armor. Do you think there is a story behind this armor? Why was it black? Who was the man who wore it and what deeds did he accomplish? This is a story that I wish the walls of this Medieval Castle could tell.
A picture of some of the weapons in the Armory - One of the biggest things to consider about Medieval Castles is that they were a place of life and death. These vicious polearm weapons show this. A Medieval Castle was built to withstand the onslaught of enemies bent on destruction. Life in a medieval castle was very serious business.

Le Rivau Castle - How is this for a fairy tale castle? This castle and it's medieval stables were visited by Joan of Arc before the siege of Orleans. Rivau was famous for its War Horses and they came to get some to fight against the British. The castle now has beautiful grounds, stables and gardens. It has all been restored to pristine shape. A Man Builds his own castle in Michigan - You don't have to buy a castle. You could build one! That's exactly what this couple in Michigan did! He sent me a terrific description of the how and why. Of course it has octagonal rooms and a spiral staircase! There is a youtube video also.

The Citadel in Cairo Egypt - This is a magnificent Medieval Fortress dating all the way back to the year 810 It was first transformed into a fortress by Saladin between 1176 and 1183 as a defense against european crusaders. 
Gillette Castle - A very peculiar castle perched on the bank of the Connecticut River. Mr Gillette made his wealth performing Sherlock Holmes in theather in the 19th Century. 
A look inside Kimball Castle - This is an old and run down castle in New Hampshire. It is purported to be haunted and it looks like people have events or halloween parties in it. There are some interesting archictural things about this castle including a beautiful atrium skylight. 
A look at Shuri Castle in Japan - This castle has many similarities to European Castles but also has some very prominent differences that are specific only to castles in Japan. I also have a whole series of pictures I took.

The case of the Mysterious Medieval Castle Solved! I stumbled upon this castle picture while going through pics on my hard drive. I could not remember where I got it or if it was even real. It looks suspiciously like its photoshopped.
